Book of the Month: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

I realise that it's a little late for this month's book, tough luck i guess.

Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Author: J K Rowling
Has also written: Do i even need to mention the others
Who should read it: People who have read the first 6 books

A bit of background first. I still remember how i first started reading the books. It was after the first movie had come out, and my brother proceeded to go out and buy the 2nd book. He promptly read a few chapters before losing interest. I have to admit, at first i was dismissive of the entire Harry Potter franchise. The movie wasn't spectacular, and my impression of the books was just something that only kids would enjoy reading. As fate would have it, I had run out of reading material one day for my dinner( usual routine-reading while i eat ), and there on the table was the Chamber of Secrets. I picked it up, and finished it in the next day or two. I then went out to buy the other books. I had become a fan.

Ok on to the book review proper. Spoiler alerts....

The book is on the whole, very enjoybale. The amount of action packed in is probably more than any two of the previous books combined. My heart did not race, but i think i was breathless during these chapters. Unfortuantely, there were a few dragyy moments in the middle of the book, where complex backstories had to be told for the benefit of storyline advancement. However, this few boring moments were sandwiched between the exciting chapters, which perhaps enhanced the effect of the action scenes by contrast.

Plot-wise, the book was excellent, with many unexpected twists and shocking revelations about characters. I have to say though, I was abit let down by the revelation of who R.A.B was. I was expecting him to be one of the crucial characters throughout the book, given how Book 6 ended. The revelations about Dumbledore were particularly good, giving the book an extra punch. It also made Dumbledore a more human character, someone more believable. A warning though to people who are expecting a easy read. The plot is rather complex, even for adults. Certain parts i found myself having to re-read again just to make sense of it. It is certainly more complex than many books I've read in the past. The essence of the story however, is still present within the book. This is a fight between good and evil, between Harry and Voldemort. The twists and turns, Horcruxes and Hallows, the deaths, the lives of the others, it still boils down to Harry vs He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

A major talking point for readers has been about the epilogue. Many feel disappointed by it, that it was too cliched, and leaving many unanswered questions. I personally felt abit let down by it, fairly anti-climatic. Oh well what you gonna do about it.

To sum up, despite the negative points, this was an excellent book overall. A fitting final book for the Harry Potter universe. A good book is one that enables the reader to lose track of time, and I remember reading it at 10pm, then looking up at the clock and seeing that it was already 3am, and still not wanting to sleep. Not many books can do that. Cheers to Rowling.

Interesting observation: Mentioned within the novel is a book called 'Twelve Fail-Safe Ways to Charm Witches', which reminded me of 'The Game'.

As usual if you wanna read the book, or any of the 6 previous books, just let me know

Babe of the Month - July 07- Megan Fox

Hi guys, it's time for the babe of the month column again. This month was a head to head fight against Megan Fox and Maggie Q, due to the hype surrounding the Transformers and Die Hard 4.0 movies. After much consideration and thinking, Megan Fox came out top of our minds.

Megan Denise Fox was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and has Native American, French and Irish ancestry. She started having drama and dance training at the age of 5 and finished her schooling and training at Florida. At the age of 13, after winning several awards at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention, she started her modelling and acting career. She acted in several movies like Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, before landing her biggest role to date, that of female lead Mikaela Banes in the film Transformers.

Fox had also appeared in many men's magazines like FHM, Maxim and GQ, and was voted number sixty-eight on the FHM 100 Sexiest Women of 2006. And sorry guys, she's engaged.

FATE

An age old question. The dictionary defines fate as "something that unavoidably befalls a person", the "decreed cause of events".

By this definition, fate cannot be changed. YOUR FATE cannot be changed. You can try changing it, but no matter what you do, the outcome will be the same. However, is fate really that unflexible?
Can fate be changed? If you know your fate, and take steps to prevent it, will your future be changed? Or is it fate's cruel design that your attempt to change your destiny, is in fact the catalyst that will ensure the fate you want to avoid happens.

In the play MacBeth, the title character, after hearing the witches' prophecy that he will become king one day, eventually kills the current king, believing that he has to take action to fulfill his fate. But he very well could have been king if he had not done anything, if he believed fate to be something unavoidable. Or has the prophecy been fulfilled, because of MacBeth's inner ambition and evil that compelled him to murder the king? MacBeth later on takes action to change fate, by attempting to kill Banquo and his son, as the witches have foretold that Banquo's descendents will be kings. MacBeth changes his view on fate again, later on in the play. He is put to ease after hearing the witches' prophecies that he need not fear any man borne of woman, and that he will only be defeated when Birnam Wood comes to Duinsinane Hill. This time, he chooses not to take any action to either fulfill or change destiny. He now views fate as unavoidable.

So what is fate? Is it a pre-determined event that is bound to happen? Or can a person change it? My fellow writers shall give their views

Green=environmental friendly?

Live earth was over bout 1 1/2 week ago. I recently saw ads showing Singaporeans wearing green on the 7Th July to show their support to live earth. How does wearing green help the environment? So what if it does raise awareness, those people showing up in green are not doing shit to help the environment at all.
Live Earth, was it a concert for the environment or was it for the celebrities to promote themselves? Seeing celebrities performing in every continent. Even performing in the Antarctica, signs of desperation from some of the artistes? Won't Live Earth be killing the earth faster? The energy used to for the sound, lights and to broadcast the show. The private plane trips to take the artistes to their performing stage. They do not realise it's the artistes who should be more aware of global warming, especially with their extravagant lifestyles. If you really want to save the earth, don't just talk about it, DO something bout IT!
Speaking of taking actions, reminded me to bring up the topic on charity shows. Every time when there's a charity show coming up, celebrities will start improving their public image by showing up at homes for the disabled, old age. But only when there's a camera around then they will be showing their love and concern for these people. Why do they not feature those volunteers who are actually working their ass off helping these people. GOC said that it doesn't matter that they only visit only when there's an event, cos he would probably do the same. He just didn't like the fact that the celebrities will start crying and trying to make us feel guilty if we do not make any donations. Seriously, the celebrities should be feeling more guilty being hypocrites.
It has been a long time since I've posted, but hey at least now I'm doing something. Where's the babe of the month post? From what I've heard it's suppose to be Megan Fox from transformers. It's almost the end of the month already.

Hi guys, just wanted to share with you some of my favourite youtube videos. This is a rock version of Pachelbel's Canon arranged by Jerry Chang from Taiwan, which he named Canon Rock.
His most famous work, Canon Rock, became an internet meme after South Korean guitarist Jeong-Hyun Lim performed a cover version in 2005. The song has garnered much media attention; his rendition has been featured on newspapers, blogs, television shows and radios worldwide. The video can be seen and downloaded on his official website, along with his many other musical endeavors.
Chang was featured in the profiles section of the January 2007 issue of Guitar World magazine, along with a tab transcription of Canon Rock in the featured songs sections. His official website: http://jerryc.tw/
